Minimum Education: High school diploma or equivalent, License Practical Nurse Preferred Minimum Work Experience: 1 year in insurance, billing, intake or authorization experience preferred. Working knowledge of medical terminology. Responsibilities: Intake Takes referrals and start of care orders on patients from referral sources. Receives and verifies all base line data information. Creates patient admission charts. Place basic patient information in the EMR. Ensures that all patient chart has a valid admit order and a current H& P. Insurance Utilization Review Responsible for contact with insurance companies to verify benefits and to receive authorizations for service. Managers the insurance utilization between insurance company approvals and staff. Ensures accurate and timely authorizations and concurrent reviews of services. Ensure that insurance authorization entered in the EMR and additional authorization are obtained when needed. Denial Appeals Addresses appeals timely and as needed. Ensures that authorization is documented appropriately. Follows up on all denials timely and conducts 2nd appeals when necessary. Face to Face Documents Responsible for obtaining appropriate face to face documentation for the home health department. Ensures that the information is enter in the EMR. Communication Answers telephones. Takes messages from patients/families and physicians. Relays messages to the appropriate staff member. Filing Files in the active and discharges patient charts. Billing Works with billing staff to assist with obtaining additional information when needed and making necessary changes to patient chart for claims processing. Discharges Responsible for the oversight of patient discharges. Ensure that the transfer summary or discharge summary is sent to the physician or receiving facility in a timely manner. Ensures that the appropriate Medicare paperwork is received on discharges (ex NOMNC). Referral Log Responsible for maintaining the referral log for the departments. Ensure that the information is accurate for reporting purposes. Coding Backup Back up to coder to ensure that all patient charts requiring precoding are completed timely when coder is on leave or working at high volume level. Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic and religious/spiritual needs of patients and their families. Functions as liaison between administration, patients, physicians and other healthcare providers. Maintains a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments. Works together as a team to provide safe, effective, quality care to all MUSC patients. Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly. Identifies, labels and reports any equipment that is not functioning properly. Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
