ESSENTIAL TASKS The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional tasks related to the type of work of the class as necessary. Assists the assigned EMS crew in checking, upkeep and use of basic emergency medical equipment and EMS stations on assigned shift, follows all applicable policies, procedures, regulations, guidelines, protocols, and standards of quality and safety. Attends required EMT class and other training and classes as directed to achieve national certification as an Emergency Medical Technician. Inspects vehicles and equipment as instructed to ensure cleanliness, sanitation, proper condition, and an adequate inventory of supplies; cleans and sanitizes vehicles, and notifies proper personnel of equipment / vehicle maintenance needs. Assists in accounting for the security and use of equipment and supplies. Drives ambulance in response to emergency calls and in transporting patients to a hospital emergency department. May perform certain procedures as immobilization and bandaging, CPR, and skills as permitted according to previous training, certification and authorization. Notifies dispatch personnel of unit status, response and transportation actions. Ensures compliance with infection control procedures before and after response. Documents actions as trained and authorized Performs general housekeeping duties as required. Performs general clerical work as required, including but not limited to preparing reports, copying and filing documents, entering and retrieving computer data, answering the telephone, etc. Keeps abreast of new technology, methods and regulations for emergency medical assistance operations; attends meetings, training and continuing education classes as required and/or appropriate to enhance job knowledge and skills and maintain certifications. Remains available 24 hours per day, seven days per week, for emergency callback.
