Position Description Advertised Job Summary The Core Manager of the Instrumentation Resource Facility at the University of South Carolina is a pivotal position responsible for the daily management of laboratory operations and state-of-the-art instrumentation. The Core Manager will work closely with the Core Director to define and implement the core’s strategic initiatives, facility reputation and long-term infrastructure enhancements. Additional duties include: managing core projects and Agilent iLab Operations software, consulting with Principal Investigators and other lab personnel on proper project workflows, ensuring compliance with all university policies and procedures, user training and oversight, maintaining core equipment, and generating critical scientific reports. Job Related Minimum Required Education and Experience Requires a master’s degree in area of research specialty. Required Certification, Licensure/Other Credentials Preferred Qualifications Master’s degree in the health sciences and at least 2 years of experience working in a research facility, or an equivalent combination of experience, training, education, and/or certification. Experience in basic science research. Familiarity with molecular biology and biochemical procedures and techniques as well as cell culture methods. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Working knowledge of overall functions, operations, and equipment in a research laboratory setting. Experience in supervision of laboratory staff and students. Some work with animals is required. Must possess strong organizational, written, and verbal communication skills. Ability to conduct business lawfully and ethically by consistently adhering to compliance policies, procedures, and regulations. Job Duties Job Duty Daily Operations Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Instrumentation Resource Facility to ensure efficient and effective service delivery. Manage scheduling, workflow, and resource allocation for the core’s projects. Act as administrator for the Agilent iLab Operations software to ensure that user activity is tracked and recorded correctly. Ensure compliance with all university policies, safety regulations, and standard operating procedures. Lead student training related to instrumentation courses offered by the School of Medicine. Offer technical advice and troubleshoot problems to ensure project success. Engage with users and potential users by hosting equipment seminars and representing the facility at internal and external research symposia. Essential Function Yes Percentage of Time 25 Job Duty Instrument & Laboratory Maintenance Maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot core instrumentation to ensure optimal performance and minimize downtime. Oversee service contracts and coordinate with vendors for repairs and maintenance. Implement and monitor regular maintenance schedules for all equipment. Maintain a clean lab environment for optimal operation. Assist with keeping up-to-date inventory of functioning equipment and other core documentation to ensure transparency and accountability.
